The global insurance industry has had a strong run, with a total shareholder return of 18.5% over the past five years—an admirable feat given pervasive headwinds.

What the Winners Have Been Doing Right

Although there are many individual stories and underlying dynamics, capital allocation and expense reduction have played meaningful—and sometimes dominant—roles in the winners’ success.

What of the Future?

Many can still emulate the playbook of recent winners with portfolio restructuring and efficiency moves. Others need a new game plan.

Advantage, Returns, and Growth

Over the longer horizon, growth is the winning lever. For the ten-year period from 2006 through 2016, 95% of the value created by the top quartile came from growth.  

Transformational Decisions

For the leaders of today to become the leaders of tomorrow, growth must return to the agenda. This is still possible with the necessary transformational mindset.
